CIDA  School for the Orphan (CSO)

CIDA School for the Orphans (CSO) offers a premier education experience to the less privileged children. With quality classes, dedicated teachers, & new facilities, including flushing toilets, make our school stand out among other urban schools with less crowded classrooms & better sanitary conditions. In addition, we shall provide two nutritious meals each day-to our students, the only meals they rely on. To help support more children, we need YOUR help to raise $487K to complete the construction of our primary school's first-level foundation.

Challenge

Due to the cancellation of fundraisers during the global pandemic, donations have dropped. We must replace these funds to secure the construction of our Primary 10 classrooms, so that we can continue with our long-term plan to expand the school through to Primary 7 & educate 300 Orphans. While children in Uganda have access to public schools, many unprivileged families can't afford the fees, & classes are often overcrowded with as many as 100 kids per class. The quality of public education is yet another concern.

Solution

Our school provides a first-rate education to orphan children in Uganda. Many of these children had never seen playground equipment & had to be taught how to use it, along with the teachers! Our students are thriving because each child is cared for in a holistic way. Our school is a safe haven to play, learn new skills, and have access to clean water and healthy meals. Constructing the first level will allow our Primary students in preprimary to graduate with a permanent space to continue their education in primary.

Long-Term Impact

Going beyond the school's primary mission, our focus is on sustainable programs that will impact the well-being of the entire community. We achieve this by using our school's grounds and facilities as a community center for weekly children's events, health clinics, women's empowerment groups, vocational training, and more. Our school’s vision is "a Place where all children reach their full potential"-starting with Kampala. We believe education is the key to help Ugandans become world-changers.

INTRODUCTION

In spite of planned development and special provision for accelerated socio-economic development of the people in and around Kampala, there are a number of neglected/disadvantaged sections such as the orphan, semi orphan and vulnerable children is not properly addressed especially in the slum areas. In this project area the population desity is over 270,000 dwellers and the number of Orphans, Semi Orphans and other Vulnerable children is overwhelmingly huge.

The education needs of orphan, semi orphan and vulnerable children in the slum areas of Kasokoso, Kiganda, Kito, Canaan, Mutungo and Butabika aren't properly addressed. In this project area, the overwhelming numbers of Orphans, Semi Orphans and other Vulnerable children keeps on growing day by day due to the many fatal challenges their parents have to face daily within the slums Due to urbanization, industrialization, deaths of HIV/AIDS affected persons, Re-marriage of Deserted / Widowed / Divorce women, Absence of love and security in the families, Family disputes, Unwanted pregnancies, child trafficking for traditional house maid’s jobs (child labor), Sexually exploited girls among others have led to increased rate of school drop outs. These orphan and vulnerable children are left without care and without any education support. These children end up getting involved in scrap and plastic picking for recycling, pick pocketing and participating in anti-social, criminal activities. Therefore, we envisage mainstreaming these children by providing care, education support and protection in using the orphan

This is a wide span of area Without any government school (s) or other organization to provide free quality education services to the vulnerable children in and around the area, urbanization, industrialization since this area is in the out-skirts of Kampala the country’s capital, floods in the area also  aggravate the situation further. The area is densely populated with poor marginalized groups. We have been identifying orphans & other vulnerable children, pre-viewing, counseling & providing education support through other education service providers at a charge but their numbers are overwhelming.

As soon as the project commences, we intend to achieve the following in the short run;

- Provide quality education to the orphans and vulnerable children in the area.

- Build and raise their confidence levels  to improve their psycho-social abilities

- Restore love, care and hope for the orphans and other vulnerable children.

-To build a new facility to accommodate many more deserving children.

- To empower children with reading resources.

- To teach the truth of Islam

- To teach proper knowledge on HIV/AIDS to the community

Then achieve the following in the long run;

- To construct dormitories for both orphan boys and girls

- To teach life skills to children and youth at risk

- To uplift the abilities of poor orphans and vulnerable children and youth whose talents and abilities are being neglected

- Children will be empowered with computer skills

- Children shall be nurtured in the Islamic way and given sound teaching and counseling.

- Beneficiaries will be provided with home, security, education and health care

We wish to construct a 10-classroom building for the start to cater for the pre-primary and lower primary section in the first phase. this shall act as a baseline for further development of the school and the project at large.

The Islamic center has 6 phases of project development. The first phase involved  the completion of the following;

  • Acquisition of land close to an acre in dimensions
  • A 500-seater community mosque (Masjid)
  • A community well with eight water distribution points
  • CIDA Uganda offices
  • A 14 toilet facility construction

The second phase includes

  • Construction of particularly, a 10 class room block ground floor of the Community school for orphans and vulnerable children. This will be a 3 story-tall building to offer other amenities to the community.
